The Business of Writing for Children: Aaron Shepard. Show, Don't Tell: Editorial Reviews Review "How To Write A Children's Picture Book" is an impressive trilogy of instructional books by children's author and illustrator Eve Heidi Bine-Stock that provides other aspiring children's authors with sound, practical, time-tested advice on constructing a picture book story for children that will hold their interest from beginning to end.
Growing up, whenever Eve Heidi Bine-Stock asked her mom what a word meant, the answer was always, "Look it up. For her 13th birthday, Eve's older brother Neil gave the budding writer a huge dictionary of her own with the inscription, "May your blessings be as numerous as the words in this book.
At age 13, Eve Heidi Bine-Stock began her publishing career by creating a girls' magazine. Fast-forward to Eve became publisher of a boutique press specializing in children's books and books for adults on how to write them. A number of books she ushered to light won awards, attesting to her skills as an editor and graphic designer.
In , the owner of the publishing house passed away and the press closed. But that didn't stop Eve! She continued publishing on her own, winning the Mom's Choice Awards and the International Book Awards for her children's book on dog breeds. Eve is also the author of the three-volume series, "How to Write a Children's Picture Book," the stand-alone title, "How to Self-Publish a Children's Picture Book," and has written pseudonymously numerous children's books.

In this book, as in the previous, the author uses examples from popular children's books, and this use of examples is a great strength in her instructions, helping us see how successful authors have accomplished what they set out to do. Her instruction on sentences isn't the typical type of writing instruction. She talks about use of the comma, changing the word order in a sentence, use of power words, use of time, frequency, and duration words, and use of superlatives.
And that's just for starters. She goes on to discuss parallelism in sentences, sentence focus, sentence order, action-reaction vs. All of this information and observation is very instructive -- not just for people who want to write children's books, but for people who want to write well at any level. Highly recommended. I disagree with the reviews that state this series is invaluable. It is helpful but not invaluable and not worth spending a lot of money on.
That being said, the strength in this series of three books is that the author dissects some classics and uses them to explain basic writing principles. Only the principles exhibited in the chosen classics are discussed.
This volume discusses sentence structure ex. What is nice about these books is that you have examples from the classics to understand the writing principles discussed especially if you have trouble seeing them yourself when you read. That is what these books are about- dissecting the classics.
