In her book Three Incestuous Sisters, Audrey Niffenegger tells the tale of a trio of The Time Traveler's Wife, a sci-fi romance about the mercurial time traveler. The Time Traveler's Wife - White Prod. . researchers work at tables stacked high with books. presents the book to a RESEARCHER, a man in his forties.
She is also writing a short-story-length sequel for the site. It sounds like Niffenegger has certainly done a lot of thinking about how she wants her book to be presented as an e-book, and I can certainly respect that. All the same, I have to wonder how effective it will really be. And speaking of finding ways to do so, the other issue with delaying her e-book so long is that it already faces significant competition from the illicit free scanned e-book version. How significant? Henry and Clare disagree over having a child, with strong arguments on both sides. Who do you think is right? I can reach into him and touch time. What tactics do they use to reconcile their past, present, and future selves?
How did this affect your reading experience? Do you ultimately find the book uplifting, or is it tragic?
Audrey Niffenegger has said that she had two rules while writing the novel: 1. Everything happens once and nothing can be changed once it has happened. Henry has a genetic disorder that causes him to time travel. He cannot control it and it is not his fault.

So I wrote it on my drawing table and continued to draw. It was unrelated to anything I was drawing or thinking about, but it caught my attention. Who was this wife, why would anyone marry a time traveler? It must be lonely, being married to someone who is often away; it must be dangerous to be a time traveler.
I had a mental image of a white-haired woman, alone in a sunny room, a cup of tea on the table before her, untouched; a woman waiting. How could I describe all that waiting, all the negative space around their marriage? I gave them names, Clare and Henry.
That was the beginning, but it took almost five years to write the book. As a graphic artist, did you ever consider presenting this story in another way?
What led you to develop it into a novel? For half an hour I imagined it as a graphic novel. But I understood that a story about time travel might be more agile if I only used words, letting the reader imagine the time shifts and jolts without my trying to depict them visually. Images can resort to all kinds of odd tricks to represent time, but prose can do it more easily.
Did introducing the element of time travel present any writing challenges? The most important rules for this book were: 1.
It will focus on the life of Alba, the time-travelling daughter Henry, who was conceived with Claire during one of his visits to her life. All my publishers were like: In a wide-ranging speech looking at both the history of text and her own route to publication — Time Traveler was rejected by more than 30 agents before it was eventually taken on — Niffenegger also spoke of her optimism about the future.
Everything has led up to this.
All this hard work, this intellectual flowering, it has now got us to a point where [our work] can really go everywhere," she said. An artist before she was an author, Niffenegger added: I don't think the world of physical books needs to be afraid.
