Like m Memawrayne May 11, I enjoyed the tv movie until the end where it just fell apart with no resolutions among the characters.
I thought I would enjoy the book more. The basis of the story was interesting, but the author portrayed all women as "sluts" or "slutty" , all the men obsessed with sex and no one had a healthy relationship.
Everyone was dysfunctional. I would like to have seen some of the characters grow up. Like d deborahjohnston Jan 30, Great read, although I found some of the story lines were unnecessary. I live near to where the story was set, and every time I pass through Clifton Hill I wonder which set of lights the old man was crossing at when Hugo spat at him.
Little beast. His mother was the one who needed the slap. Like t Thai Dec 06, Interesting writing style, to have different perspectives around a central issue. Got a bit confusing because there are a lot of characters and Tsiolkas doesn't use proper quotation marks. Definitely got me thinking about how would I feel if this incident occurred.
Reminded me of the scenery and culture when I studyied abroad in Melbourne. Like r rosegold11 Oct 31, I don't understand why the hell would a old man slap a four year old that's not his child at a BBQ its stupid and funny sorry for my language and why didn't the do anything the author just keep on talking about the slap very odd boo didn't enjoy it Like ksoles Oct 23, In "The Slap," a small incident turns into a big novel: the slapping of a four-year-old brat at a BBQ in suburban Melbourne balloons into pages that follow the lives of eight witnesses.
Hector, a civil servant of Greek origin, and his Indian wife, Aisha, host the event while Hector's cousin, Harry, administers the slap to Hugo, spoilt son of ex-hippy Rosie and alcoholic Gary.

This was the first book in a long time that I could simply not put down.
I loved the way the writer saw so many different perspectives of the same thing. I like a long book because I read a lot. But, this book just seemed to be long for no reason.
There seemed to be a lot of parts that could have been left out. I liked the characters and some of the plot lines. Although this book was long I don't have a lot to say about it.
Okay read, but give yourself time to read it and understand it. Not a day at the beach read.
